<p style=”text-align: justify;”>The Department of Geological Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Gadjah Mada welcomed a visit from Prof. Yoichi Motoyoshi of the National Institute of Polar Research (NIPR), Japan, from August 29 to 31, 2017. The visit was part of a series of academic activities that included a guest lecture and a field trip to the Karangsambung area. Prof. Yoichi Motoyoshi, affectionately known as Motoyoshi-sensei, served as the Chief of the 58th Japanese Antarctic Research Expedition (JARE-58). The expedition lasted six months, commencing in November 2016, with a research focus on the Antarctic region.

<p style=”text-align: justify;”>This event was initiated by Nugroho Imam Setiawan, Ph.D., a lecturer at the Department of Geological Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, UGM. Dr. Nugroho is recognized as the only Indonesian representative to have been part of the JARE-58 team, as well as the first researcher from Indonesia — and indeed from the ASEAN region — to have conducted research directly in Antarctica. The guest lecture delivered by Motoyoshi-sensei commenced at 08:00 Western Indonesian Time (WIB) in Room 2.1 of the KPFT Building, UGM. The event was attended by lecturers, students, and participants from both within and outside UGM. Held under the theme “Basic Metamorphic Petrology and Antarctic Geology,” the lecture was conducted in an interactive manner and was met with enthusiastic responses from attendees.

<p style=”text-align: justify;”>The morning session featured the presentation of material accompanied by active discussion and a question-and-answer segment. In the afternoon session, discussions continued through direct observation of rock samples brought from Antarctica. Through this visit, the Department of Geological Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, UGM hopes to soon formalize a cooperation agreement with NIPR. This collaboration is expected to strengthen international research networks and enhance the quality of geological research.
